Easter Egg Inspiration and a Contest

by evie s. on March 21st, 2008

I thought I’d post this Good Friday on the subject of Easter eggs! I hope you will be inspired by these lovely images of different ways you can decorate and design some fierce looking eggs.

Every year, my family challenges each other to an Easter egg coloring contest. There are many creative people in my family, so it’s always a big deal, and many great entries. Even though Easter means more to me than coloring eggs, it’s still a festive activity I look forward to, even as an adult.

If you are an avid egg decorator, you may want to take part in a contest of your own. Hatch Design has put together their 1st Annual Egg Coloring Contest. You can submit your entry, and even judge current entries. [ Via Creative and Live ]

A Dramatic Mobile Centerpiece

by evie s. on December 28th, 2007

A Dramatic Mobile CenterpieceI recently stumbled across this photo of a hand-crafted mobile made from some branches, silver wire and paper that’s been cut into star shapes. This idea is so fresh and unique and would add a lot of drama to a holiday table. A New Years Eve party would be a perfect setting for it. There are also many different ways to add flair: Spray paint the branches gold or silver, use colored or patterned paper, or use different shapes for the hanging ornaments.

Free PDF Download: Christmas Tree Decoration

by evie s. on December 19th, 2007

Paper Christmas TreeAre you looking for some cheap and easy table decorations for your Christmas Eve dinner? evie s. has created a free downloadable graphic Christmas tree that you can easily print out on an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper. These paper trees are so festive and such a great craft to make! And I love how simple they are. They would also look great among a miniature wintry Christmas village, like this one or this one.

Just download the PDF using the link below and simply cut around the pattern and fold where indicated. We recommend using a medium weight card stock to help it stand on its own.

Old-School Gift Wrap from Funnel Paper Goods

by evie s. on December 17th, 2007

Funnel Paper GoodsI love this gift wrap from Funnel Paper Goods. Their original printed patterns are inspired by thoughts of ancient, vinyl-padded patio furniture, well-worn flannel pj’s and musty books intended to dress-up the event of Christmas. With designs named “Uncle Bob’s Pajamas” and “Dottie’s Decor,” the patterns are whimsical and unique. It’s also a nice departure from the busy and brightly patterned paper you see everywhere. You can purchase them on their website for $12 each.

Plywood Christmas Tree from Buro North

by evie s. on December 5th, 2007

Plywood Christmas TreeA plywood Christmas tree, created by Buro North, is truly a different spin on the typical evergreen spruce. It’s a little too modern for my tastes but I do like the concept, the overall design, and packaging. These Aussie graphic designers have labeled it “eco-friendly” because it’s made with environmentally aware ingredients, and they are CNC routered (a low-energy production technique) with waste material. The tree comes flat packed and available in three sizes, small, medium, and large.

DIY Project: Ribbon Christmas Trees

by evie s. on December 3rd, 2007

Here’s a project for all you crafters and do-it-yourselfers. This is a fairly simple project to make, and it only takes on average about 20 minutes to do one tree.

SuppliesSupplies you will need:

ribbon Christmas treesFor the base, I just used a wooden spool that you can get from a craft store. Paint it brown and set aside. You can also glue the wood grain ribbon around the spool to create a more woodsy feel. For the tree, you will need to measure around the circumference of the Styrofoam with the ribbon and then cut to the appropriate length. You will need to measure and cut each ribbon individually and glue in the back, slightly overlapping them to create a layered effect. This will create a seam, so you will want to create the tree for a specific location where the seam can be hidden from view. (Note: Any ideas to eliminate this seam are welcome.) Continue this process until you get to the very top. You can finish by gluing the wooden spool to the bottom of the tree.

Voila! A very shimmery, classic handmade tree that you can enjoy for years to come.
