There are hundreds of great inspiring and creative blogs to read, but do you ever wonder which blogs everyone else is reading? I do, which is why I have compiled a list of the top 150 design, inspiration, and DIY blogs – I call them all Makers.
The blogs are measured and ranked based on 5 criteria (Alexa rank, Compete traffic, Google Pagerank, Google Reader subscribers, Yahoo! inlinks). Scroll down to the bottom of the list to see specifics on how the list was compiled.
This list certainly isn’t perfect. Each of the 5 criteria have their quirks. However, I do think this mashup is a step in the right direction of creating better lists. Because of these quirks, one blogger has requested to be removed from the rankings, which is noted in the list.
I tried to scour and dig for the most popular sites out there, but it’s nearly impossible to know about them all. By all means, if you don’t see a blog on the list that you think should be there, please email me at info at evie-s.com
Have fun browsing! I’m sure you will find a bunch of blogs you didn’t know about.

Oh wow Evie! This must have taken you ages to compile! Thank you so much. And of course I’m thrilled to have made the list. There are soooo many amazing blogs in the world. It’s an honor to be included! xo
oh wow, i can’t believe mine made it! thank you so much for taking that time and picking my little blog! I have posted the button on my post today, http://jaynsarah.blogspot.com/2011/04/jcrew-girls-petal-necklace-tee-diy.html
best wishes, Sarah
so excited to discover this list – even more thrilled to see myself on it and the most excited about discovering your lovely site. Cheers!
I’m sorry, I just found this list and it’s hugely flawed. I have sent you an email with the reasons. But for the sake of any readers, one needs to know.
Hi Jan, I’m certainly not claiming it’s a perfect list, all of the tools I used (Alexa, Compete, PageRank, InLinks and Google Reader Subs) each have their quirks. So yes, it is imperfect unfortunately, but what it does give are a great stepping stone to some of the best blogs out there.
Compete is NOT an authoritative source; using them makes this list totally inaccurate. This is a completely flawed listing. Design Sponge is a much higher rank than is allegedly reported.
And sorry I have to say it’s a pretty irresponsible way to create a stepping stone to finding good blogs.
I’m sorry you don’t like the list, Jan. I’d like people to see it as just that – a list of beautiful and inspiring blogs. And I do stand by it as that.
I’m sure the list had good intentions, however even so, lists like this can be used irresponsibly by “others” making claims that are based on inaccurate information and harmful to those not in the know. I sent in a question to (SEO Q & A) written by Bekka of Minted Condition who has worked in the SEO field for the past three years to help explain to us why lists like this are inaccurate. Click here to read her answer. http://www.mintedcondition.com/seo-q-why-list-inaccurate#comment-318
Also you had my google readers way off as well.
Interesting read, thanks Jan. I agree, lists like these are never 100% accurate. The tools that are available just have too many variables and inaccuracies. Even using twitter as she suggest to measure a ranking would render inaccurate results because twitter followings can be artificially inflated.
I guess the bottom line here is that this is the first list of it’s kind in this niche that doesn’t rank by purely subjective opinion. By all means if you have a better idea on how to do it, would love to hear. Or you could always make your own. :)
I think it’s a fascinating window into the blog world — to see this list and response it has inspired. I love reading so many of these wonderful blogs listed and I intend to subscribe to some new ones as well. Good work, Evie!
I think (unless you are a statistician) all you are qualified to create is a “subjective list”, trying to be scientific is just loosing credibility. And for the record, it isn’t the first one of it’s kind, nor probably will it be the last.
Like I’ve said, publishing something like this is totally irresponsible and it concerns me and others. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Also I think if the blogs are in the Top 150 or so, probably most everyone knows about them already; you might have done better introducing “great blogs to know” that maybe aren’t as well known – if you were really trying to introduce people to new blogs. If you’re trying to drive traffic to your site – which I think is really what’s happening here, I would suggest doing something a little more positive in the future.
Anyway, best to you.
Thanks Erin! I had a great time going through the list…over half of these blogs I’d never heard of before!

I’ve been browsing online more than 3 hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours. It’s pretty worth enough for me. In my opinion, if all site owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the web will be a lot more useful than ever before.
Such an excellent post! I have no clue how you wrote this report..it’d take me days. Well worth it though, I’d assume. Have you considered selling ads on your website?
I am only commenting to make you be aware of what a awesome discovery my cousin’s child undergone going through yuor web blog. She picked up plenty of details, including how it is like to have a very effective coaching style to make folks with ease know specified grueling issues. You really exceeded her desires. This was an awesome post. Very insightful!
Hi there would you mind stating which blog platform you’re using? I’m planning to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a hard time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique. P.S Sorry for getting off-topic but I had to ask!
