DIY Yarn Wrapped Monograms
Categories: DIY | 41 comments
I’ve got a lovely project to share with you. I used this monogram for a sweet friend’s baby shower. I love making party decorations that they can bring home and use as part of their decor. A word of warning though, this is not for the faint of heart. It took a loooong time to wrap this letter. But the results…so worth it!!

Step 1: Print out your monogram using a rounded font in your desired size. I used St. Ryde. Rounded corners make it easier to work around.
Step 2: Cut out the letter and trace onto cardboard. I used a Cheerio box!

Step 3: Wrap away! You can wind some yarn off a skein or ball to make a smaller ball – this is more manageable. Make as many balls as you need. I also recommend a thick yarn, which would make your job a lot easier and faster. I probably wrapped the whole letter at least 3 times with mine to get everything covered and nice and thick.
Step 4: A bajillion wraps later, and you’re done! Hot glue the ends down in the back of the letter.
You can leave it as is for a more modern look, or you can have fun with it and embellish with buttons, fabric flowers, ribbon, bows, whatever! That’s the fun part. I made up some fabric yo-yos and embellished with some pretty beads in the center.
I made mine pretty big – about 7 inches tall, but you can make smaller ones too. I think that a little one would be super cute.

Just one question. How would you do a letter with ends. Like a J, how do you keep the yarn from not falling off?
Justine – you can wind some yarn off a ball or skein to make smaller balls – as many as you need. Then you can hot glue the ends down when your yarn runs out to hold it in place. Does that makes sense?
Ah that makes sense. Thanks Evie, I’ll give this a go at the weekend. I doubt it will look as nice as yours!

Oh and one other thing, to cover the ends of the J you could wrap the yarn horizontally instead of vertically.
This is so fabulous! I love it. Thanks for the great tutorial. xo

Love it! Something easy to do while I wait for baby to arrive! Shared it on my blog.
Just made an “L” for my Lula. The ends were not easy, but I managed and it turned out pretty cute! Will probably use some hot glue next time around to do the ends. I have an idea for my kids’ room using these. Once I’m finished I’ll post on my blog and let you know! Thanks!
thank you for sharing , I love that and can’t wait to try one
I shared this on my facebook/twitter! Lovely idea!

I love finding craft ideas that are lovely, inexpensive, and something I could actually do! I will try to do an “@” symbol in addition to letters and can’t wait. Thanks!

How did you make the flowers on the yarn letter?
Kelly, they are called yo yo’s. You can see a tutorial how to make them here:

How did you attach the beads to the yo yo’s? I have seen them done with buttons and attaching them by sewing through the holes, but did you just glue the beads on?
Hi Paige! Yes, I just sewed them on.
What if you used this as a picture frame! :D It won’t work with all letters but a “B” for example would be great. Maybe a young picture of yourself in the smaller space, and a recent photo of yourself in the larger..? :)

hellooooooooooooo! i made the letter F last night. it was my first attempt at a craft! it turned out pretty well. but my cardboard is too “bendy” and i cant get it to stand up well on my mantel.
any tips?
Thanks!
Hi Brooke! You could always cut another cardboard piece (smaller than your letter) and hot glue it on the back for support. Hope that helps! Glad you tried the project. :)

I covered some small florist’s foam with yarn and small sunflowers for my Mum’s super simplistic wedding that’s coming up. . Not something I recommend, btw, the foam kept falling apart. XD But that was my fault, they were cheap and they still look adorable. I’d love to do this for her! A ‘C’ and a ‘K’….adorable! Thanks for the idea. ^_^
Great idea to print out and trace the letter! I made an “&” but didn’t want to deal with all the corners. So I cut it into pieces and hot glued it back together!
