I picked up this beautiful solid wood bowl in the FREE pile at an estate sale. Of course I couldn’t resist picking it up and doing something with it to give it a new life. So I had the idea to fill the crack with some homemade clay. I made the clay, squished it into all the cracks, cleaned off all the excess, and then poked little dots into the clay with a toothpick. Put it into the oven, and that’s it!

It’s much more presentable now, and I was lucky that the crack made such a pretty design.
Here is an easy recipe for homemade clay:
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1/4 cup water
Make sure the dough isn’t too stiff or too watery. Knead by hand until smooth. Bake at 250 degrees for about an hour and a half.
So the lesson here is, just because something is damaged doesn’t mean it’s worthless. Be creative and figure out a way to rescue it! To see full-size photos go here.

Makes me think of these wise words:
But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. (2 Cor. 4:7-9)

Aren’t estate sales fun? In fact, the house that my family and I live in right now was part of an estate sale. There were lots of old goodies left in the house, and we have had fun sorting through all of them. Many were junk, but some were great finds. Love the way your bowl turned out!
